Let me know what you guys think. xP
"Sato! Don't stay out for too long! When you're done gathering those crops come inside!"
"Yes sir!"
Sato was crouching near the ground, gathering up cereal grain, later to be grinded into delicious rice. He loved rice. Everyday he got up in the morning and sat down on his knees to practice his handwriting. After that the rest of the day was just a daily routine performing random errands for his father, pulling out weed, feeding plants, raking, gathering crops; the usual thing for a farmer's life. He was so concentrated in his work that he almost seemed to be morphed into the ground; people would walk by looking for him only to realize he was right under their nose.
"There you are!"
Huh? Sato glanced to his right, spotting a pair of very familiar feet. He pushed up against the end of his sedge hat and squint his eyes to see the silhouette of a fair woman, whose visage was elluded by the sun's relentless rays. The only thing he could make out was her smile. Having a pretty good idea of who she was, he returned the gesture. Standing up straight, he withdrew his straw hat so it would hang behind him by a thread and used his arm to block the sun from his eyes. His unruly brown hair flooded out and fluttered frantically in the wind.
"Fumi!" he called, getting a much clearer view of the woman. She wore a white kimono speckled with pink sakura flowers and her black hair hung freely down to her shoulders. "What a surprise to see you around here-" he said, but his attention was caught by a fleeting figure in the distance. His eyes were slanted suspiciously and Fumi curiously followed his gaze. "That's the fifth one all day," Sato murmurred, "is something going on?"
He wasn't exactly directing his question towards anyone in particular, but Fumi heard it none-the-less and felt obligated to enlighten the poor clueless bastard. "I guess you can't help it living all the way out here," she said. Sato's eyes derailed and regressed to their primal focus. Fumi obviously knew something and now she had to tell him even if she changed her mind. Fumi adapted her serious face and cautiously leaned towards Sato's face, looking both ways for any eavedroppers.
"There have been numerous reports lately about a mysterious shadow lurking within the walls lately. Everyone thought they were just some kids pulling pranks, but food has been disappearing inexplicably in large ammounts. But what really got them on their toes was when various people started seeing that same shadow in their bedrooms during the night and even in their showers while they bathed! -What a creep!" She stated. "Since then everyone has been on high alert, told to stay inside their homes and the ammount of Samurai surveying the area has been increased."
"How long has this been happening?" Sato asked. "Roughly three days now," she said. "That explains it, I don't go to town until tomorrow." Fumi closed her eyes disapprovingly and shook her head. "There's no excuse for ignorance, Sato, don't try to hide behind your status." "-Ouch... What was that about?" The girl smirked mischievously and turned around with her fingers locked behind her back. "If we're to marry, I gotta make sure you're not a dumb ignoramous who's only good for pulling out weed."
Sato pouts, "you're too harsh." "But I'm yours!" she said turning on the tip of her geta sandals with a big perky grin on her face. Sato chuckled. "You're always teasing me!" "I can't help it, it's who I am," she replied, taking cover under Sato's arms. "So... what do you think it is?" "I don't know, but they think its a spy from one of our enemy territories," she said, pushing herself away from him. "No way!" he frowned, "what could they be looking for here?" Fumi looked at him silently. He sighed and looked at the setting sun.
"Sato!"
The couple turned their attention to a middle-aged man waving at them from the small wooden shack Sato called home. Fumi waved back, "well, I better get going..." "You're leaving already?" he said. "Why not stay for supper?" "I've got things to do, Sato." He frowned disappointedly. Fumi grinned teasingly and skidded away. "Later!"
"Did you store away the stacks?" the man asked. "Yes sir, I'm taking them inside the walls tomorrow morning," Sato replied. They sat down on the wooden floor and awaited his mother to eat some delicious noodle ramen. "Great! This has extra meat!" he murmurred with joy. Sato would sleep like a baby tonight! "Why didn't you invite Fumi?" his mother asked. "I did," he said, "but she had other things to do." "Ah."
"Did you guys hear about what's happening in town?" Sato wondered. "You mean the food shortage?" his mother asked. "Partly, but no. They say people have been encountering weird shadows all around. They think it's a spy so they've tightened security." "That explains a lot," his father said. "How frightening!" his mother exclaimed.
Generally, that was how they spent the evening at dinner time. The small family would gather at the table during dinner and eat between casual small talk. They never really spoke much, save the topics involved with work or his arranged marriage to Fumi. Although he wouldn't mind a bit more conversation, the silence was soothing after a long day's work. Later, that night would go like any other; he'd take a hot warm bath, get into comfortable cloths and seek refuge within his futon.
Unfortunately, Sato had trouble getting to sleep with all the commotion. His mind was warped on the thought of a spy and thought this could lead to all out war. He had never been in a war, but the stories from his elders was enough for him to know it was definitely not something he should envy. The calm and peaceful night had quickly turned into ghastly experience with the eerie cool winds causing the wooden planks to creak. The chirring sound sent shivers down Sato's spine.
Looking for comfort he crawled out of bed and opened a secret wooden compartment under his floor. It was a place that not even his parent's nor his fiancee knew about. Inside it he stored a small white, round object, with brown designs in the curves fitting for him to wrap his fingers around it. He kept it hidden from the others until he knew what it was, but no matter how much he pressed on the round protruding pieces or hit them against the floor, nothing happened. Sato had many predictions and suspicions, but the most realistic possibility implied it might be some kind of knew weapon fabricated by an opposing kingdom.
Sato gasped. With the object in his hands everything seemed to make sense now. The alleged spy snooping around was probably just trying to retrieve it, which meant Sato and his family were in danger. As soon as they found out he had it they would kill them to assure the safety of their secret; but it was so small and seemingly useless, holding closer to his face he realized it just couldn't be. He sighed and relaxed.
"I found you!"
Whao! Sato yelped, dropped the thing inside the hidden door and turning sharply. He only caught but a glimpse of a small shadow. If it were anyone else they'd be screaming by now, but Sato caught his by the neck and sketched the dim room. It was so quiet he almost dared to entertain the thought that it was all in his mind, but who was he kidding? He could have mistaken the shadow with that of a tree branch shifting in the wind, but he heard something. He heard WORDS! It was loud, clear, and somewhat high-pitched and quirky. Sato closed his secret door and peeked out in the living room and then outside. It was cold. Whoever it was, it was gone.
The next morning, his father had to wake him up. Sato was heading out through the walls, and he took the odd object with him. He was staring out at a lake with it in hand and tossed it as far as he could, never to be seen again. He still didn't know what it was that saw him that night but his memory was so blurry it could have just been a dream. "What happened? You usually wake up early." "I... couldn't sleep." "Hmm..." "Hey, dad, did any of you pass by my room last night?" "No, why?" "Nothing..."
"Good morning Maeda!" a tall and burly man said, giving Sato a pat on the back with his beefy hands and nearly tipping him over along with the wooden hamper tied to his back with all the cereal grains he had gathered. The market was bustling with life. "Morning Mr. Masaato," he sighed, emptying the grains in another basket. "What's wrong, boy? You're dead on your feet." Hey! "-Huh!?" Sato turned to a corner, swearing he heard something. "Maeda?" the man insisted. He was starting to worry. Sato adjusted his hamper and offered a weak grin. "Rough night."
The shopkeeper was perplexed by what that could have meant, but their thrilling conversation was so readily thwarted by the frantic voice of his bride-to-be. "Saaaatooooo!" she cried, now running with a blue and red kimono, her face devastated. Fumi rushed and took shelter within Sato's arms, almost making him tumble down. She looked up with those glossy eyes like she was about to cry, but as she attempted to speak all her racing heart could manage was, "last night..."
"HO-hO!" The shopkeeper exclaimed, thinking he put the pieces together. "Maeda, you dog!" he praised whimsically. "What!?" Sato retorted, but before he could protest, Mr. Masaato had already left laughing to himself. "I saw it..." Fumi finally managed. Sato's eyes widened. "I was sleeping when I heard a strange noise. Next thing I know there was a shadow and it disappeared without a trace. I was so afraid!" she said, burrying his face in his chest. Sato rest his hand on her head comforting, "it was a dream," he thought. "There's no way it could have been at her house and mine..."
Hehehe...
"What!?" he exclaimed, glancing at a small shadow before it ricochet through some stacked logs, causing them to collapse on the floor. There was panic among the citizens as they backed away and the obscure object took refuge in an alley. "There it is! Fumi stay here," Sato said, promptly after running in after it. As expected the alley was dark and he wouldn't be surprised to find a few brokers around. "Where are you!" his voice echoed. Over here! The voice was coming from a pile of garbage secluded at the end of the alley. Sato frowned. How hard could it be to just dispose of it properly in a garbage can? It was much easier just tossing it out the window.
As Sato got closer he could see a figure hidden behind the dump and he stared down disapprovingly. "Why have you been terrorizing the town?" "I've been looking for you." he replied. Sato was surprised by the sound of his voice. He sounded so small, almost like a child -but he wouldn't be fooled so easily, it was a ruse! "Who are you? Show yourself!" as demanded, the little figure, presumed to be the feet hopped out of hiding and into the scarce light. "I'm Kaichiimon!"
Sato narrowed his eyes in askance and was disappointed to see nothing but a small green turtle shell. "How stupid do you think I am!?" he said, "get out of hiding!" He charged at the pile of trash and started to rummage through it in an attempt to find the child who was behind all of the pranks. The mysterious voice moaned audibly and soon enough the green shell started bouncing its way over the rubble and in Sato's face. "I'm not hiding, I'm right here! See?" Sato's sugar dropped. He paused for almost a full minute, staring into the eyes which were gazing at him from within the dark opening of the turtle shell.
He couldn't manage a plausible response but smile blankly at the object until his nerves finally kicked in. Sato gasped and jumped back, landing on the gorund. He was flabbergasted to discover that their 'spy' was a talking and moving turtle shell. Heck, the fact that it was a talking shell was enough rustle anyone's jimmies. "W-what are you!?" he exclaimed. "I'm a Digimon, Digital Monster!" it replied, jumping off the trash. Sato panicked and kicked the air as he moved back with his hands. "Get away from me you monster!"
"Not monster, Digital Monster! Di-gi-tal," he corrected with a slightly annoyed voice. Sato frowned as the thing got closer despite warnings and socked it with his feet. AAaAhh! he cried, slamming against the brick wall and falling into the dump. "What you do that for!?" Sato got back up with a puzzled face. "Where did you come from and what do you want from me?"
"Geez! Isn't it obvious? I'm from the Digital World! And I've been waiting for you all my life!" he explained, hopping out of the trash heap. Sato was slightly startled but his fear was easing away with the realization that it couldn't possibly hurt him. "I'm taken!" he said. "What's the Digital World." "Sato, think, we've been over this. The Digital World is where I'm from." "Well, why don't you just go back then and leave me and everyone else alone? -Wait, how do you know my name?"
Kaichiimon groaned, "I dunno, I just do. And I can't go back, not without you!" "But what do you want me for-" "Sato?" Sato jumped in his skin to hear a sudden voice behind him. Realizing who it was he grabbed the shell without a second thought and dumped it inside his black kimono. "Fumi!" he greeted with a wide grin. The turtle shell protested though and started fidgeting around, "shut up!" he murmurred. "What?" Fumi asked. "What?" Sato replied. There was a sudden silence as if she was trying to decide what to make of it but then decided to drop it.
"What are you doing?" she asked. Sato sighed. "Is someone there? I could've sworn I heard someone..." "What? I don't know what you're talking about!" he replied nervously, "there's no-one here but me, you must be hearing things. -Say, didn't I tell you to wait outside?" "Yes but you were taking too long and I got worried. Are you alright?" "Yeah, but I lost him..." he said disappointedly. "Aw, it's too bad, but it's probably for the better..." "You're right, lets head back," Sato suggested.
"I'm home!" Sato cried dashing to his room without another word and slamming the door shut. "Finally! AIR!" the green turtle shell exclaimed as it was tossed on the futon. "Alright, spill it. Nobody will bother us here." "You're so gentle! Is that how you woo the ladies?" "Save the small talk for later. What is the Digital World and what do you want with me?" It was hard to identify any sort of expression when you're talking with a shell, but with the sounds it made and the sudden jerking movements, Sato deduced it was pouting. "I don't want to, I'm hungry!" he whined. Sato sighed, "fine... what do you eat?" "What do you have?" it retorted. Just looking at the thing's little round sparkly eyes said this wasn't gonna be a good idea.
Half an hour had passed and the thing had gone through nearly half of their produce. His parents could only gawk in silence everytime Sato left his room for more food. He felt like they deserved an explanation but he couldn't think of a reasonable answer but: "I'm a growing man!" and then slamming the door. He'd observe the little thing as it ate away all the food, and all he could do was wonder how he ate it without a mouth and where it all went. Not a soul would believe this if he told them.
"Why didn't you tell her?" he asked all of a sudden. Sato was silent, unable to catch on on what he meant. "When that girl popped out of nowhere, why did you hide me?" Sato sighed. "Because, I don't know how she'd react. I don't know what you are and if people found out it would cause panic. I don't want to cause my family any trouble." "I told you, I'm Kaichiimon, a Digimon." "That may seem like an answer in your little head, but it doesn't really help," Sato explained. "Let's start from the beginning. What is the Digital World."
Kaichiimon sighed. "The Digital World is where I come from- are you going deaf on me?" "But what is it?" Sato insisted. "What do you mean? It is what it is, can you explain what your world is?" Sato was silent... "Fine, where is the Digital World?" "That my friend, lies with your Digivice." "My wha?" "You're Digivice," he repeated. The small shell started bouncing over the hidden door on the floor. "It's the thing you were storing under here."
Sato gasped. "So you were the one who was in my room last night?" "That's right!" he exclaimed. "Then why did you run away?" "You scared me... didn't want to get kicked, if you know what I mean." Sato grinned, "alright, sorry for that. But does this mean you were also the one stealing food and playing pranks on everyone?" Kaichiimon nodded by moving its shell up and down; the shine in his eyes implied he was proud of it. Sato groaned. So much for the great mysterious spy, he thought, throwing himself on the floor.
"You seem pretty relaxed for a change," the shell spoke. "Why don't you hurry up and open that secret compartment of yours so we can check that Digivice out?" Sato didn't seem convinced. "Why can you speak my language?" "I'm not, it just sounds like I am." "Can't you ever give me a straight answer?" Sato protested. The room was suddenly filled with a rumbling sound. "I'm hungry!" "You just ate!" Sato couldn't believe it, the thing had just eaten half of their food and it wanted more. "Fine, just take out the Digivice already!" "About that..." Sato hesitated, "I kinda... threw it out..." "WHAT!?"
Kaichiimon and Sato were standing in front of a big lake. The sun was setting so there was nobody around but a few birds picking fish from the water. "It was around here, I tossed it into this lake." The turtle shell sighed, "alright, I'm goin' in for it!" but just as he jumped into the water he was driven back out by another force. "What happened?" Sato asked. "Otamamon!" Right on cue black thing hopped out of the lake. It had big round eyes, a wide mouth big enough to eat a tiny turtle shell, a tailfin, and clawed paws. "These thing's are everywhere!" Sato exclaimed.
The black tad-pool-like digimon rose its claws to the air. "Wrapping Bubble!" it screamed. "What's it doing?" Sato asked. "Watch out above!" Kaichiimon warned. There was little time to react between the time it took him to look up and realize a ball of water was forcing over his head. It dropped and washed Sato away. "Agh!" he cried. The little shell digimon stepped up, "don't worry, Sato, I'll protect you!" "Wow, I feel so safe."
"Shell Teaser!" Kaichiimon called. For a moment, Sato gawked in awe, thinking he was actually going to do something; but their plan backfired and Kaichiimon simply rebounded off of the Otamamon. "Stay off my property!" he said, following up with a claw strike that propelled Kaichiimon a couple feet away. "Kaichiimon!" Sato called. Suddenly, a bright like shined from within the lake and then sprung out of the water into Sato's hands. The glowing object would soon reveal itself to be that white and brown device from before. "It's the Digivice!" he cried. "It's time to Digivolve," Kaichiimon lectured, but Sato remained silent. "What...?"
Suddenly, the little green turtle shell began to glow brightly and grew to about the size of a small puppy. He had a head, feet, and a tail. "You changed!" he gasped. "I'm Kuraramon now!" he said, revealing his purple eyes. "But you're just a turtle!" he protested. "Oh yeah? What this!" Kuraramon lunged himself at Otamamon and receded into his shell, rotating in place. "Spinning Barrel!" He yelled, slamming against the other Digimon.
Otamamon tumbled backwards and groaned, "so you think you're tough? Lullaby Bubble- ahh!!" he yelped. Before he could do anything, Sato decided he had enough of this and kicked him into the water. Otamamon rose back irritated, "What did you do that for? You're so mean!" "-I'm just glad it wasn't me this time," Kuraramon commented. That's when the water suddenly rose and opened up, sucking Otamamon in. "Wh-what's that!?" Sato exclaimed. "That, my friend, is our ticket to the Digital World. I'll race ya!"
"Sato! Don't stay out for too long! When you're done gathering those crops come inside!"
"Yes sir!"
