History: Megumi Yamasaki always a bright individual, though she always kept it to herself and saw no point in flaunting it about. She was a woman of science with particular interest in robotics. Her days of youth were spent tinkering on various projects that sparked her curiosity, though nothing big was ever actually accomplished. There was always a special place in her heart for androids. Creating life from machinery was a fascinating concept. Many a day was spent locked away in her makeshift laboratory in the basement looking over and perfecting any blueprints she could get her hands on. Megumi never actually constructed an entire android though. It was always just bits and pieces that were later disassembled and reassembled in various ways. The woman had always been a perfectionist. She didn’t want to end up with some second rate piece of junk when she was aiming for a masterpiece. After all, this was her life’s work.
The years flew past like nobody’s business. Megumi eventually settled down, found a husband, and even had a few kids. She now made a living repairing broken gadgets and appliances. Attempting to create an android was more like a hobby nowadays than the obsession it once was. She could never tweak any blueprints she found quite to her liking. There was always a flaw somewhere in them. No matter how minor that flaw might have been, Megumi refused to accept it. It frustrated her to no end. Her family was completely unaware of this dulled passion of Megumi’s for the most part. Her husband was the exception to this. However, even he only ever caught a glimpse or two before being shooed out of basement.
One day, Megumi up to her usual tinkering in basement. She had grown into an old woman alongside her husband, yet had never lost her interest in androids. Her husband had gone away on vacation with her children who had all grown into fine adults, as well as her granddaughter. Megumi saw this as an opportunity to spend some quality time in the basement without interruption, so she opted to stay home. The elderly woman had spent the day working with various pieces of scrap metal with only the light of the television to illuminate her workbench. Suddenly, a news report flashed on the screen with some devastating information. The island that Megumi’s family had been staying on had been completely obliterated by unknown invaders.
Megumi had no idea how long she stared at that television screen with wide eyes and mouth agape. Shortly after report had finished, there was nothing but static on the screen. Still she couldn’t tear her gaze from it. She didn’t know what to say. A little voice in the back of her mind coaxed her into lying down, giving up, and joining her family. However, as inviting as that voice sounded, Megumi knew that it wasn’t time to rest her old bones just yet. Something big was happening. There was something she felt in her gut that told her she needed to stay alive through it.
Using her talents to only work on a single project would have been boring. Therefore, there were many different devices scattered about the basement with different functions from projects Megumi hadn’t quite gotten around to finishing yet. One such device only needed minor work done on it before it would serve its purpose to its creator. It was a metal gadget no larger than the palm of Megumi’s hand. This gadget was meant to plug into her heart and attach to her ribs for support. Once in place, it would manually keep her heart pumping and inject her with trace amounts of chemicals to keep her going long after her expiration date. The surgery to put the device in place was difficult, but it was nothing Megumi couldn’t handle with enough anesthetic to kill a lesser creature.
The years that followed weren’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. While she didn’t have to worry about age doing her in, the Saiyans that now infested the planet were a different story all together. When Megumi wasn’t busy scrounging for food or finding places to hide from the Saiyans, she did what she could to continue her work on the android blueprints. She had managed to store most of the important components and materials inside a dynocap before fleeing from her home. However, finding places to actually sit down and work were few and far between with such undesirable conditions.
As if Megumi’s new lifestyle wasn’t bad enough, she had to keep replacing the mechanism that was keeping her alive when she started having heart problems forty years after she initially attached it to herself. Megumi managed to stay alive for another thirty years before heart problems came back once more. The device had worked wonderfully at expanding her life span. However, she seemed to be getting fewer years out of it with each replacement. The old woman had a long way to go, but she wouldn’t last forever. Surely enough, the next replacement only lasted for about twenty two years. It was then that Megumi came to the realization that if she waited for perfection, she would surely die before her work was completed. If she was going to build an android, she was going to have to start immediately.
Eventually, Megumi found her way to the Ghettien Settlement. Life was still difficult since she was living in squalor and surrounded by shady characters, but it was still better than constantly worrying about being found by a Saiyan at any given point in time. With all of the years she had been alive, she was bound to run out of luck one of these days. The Ghettien Settlement was a welcomed change. Poking around at various buildings, Megumi came across one with a hidden hatch on the floor that revealed a basement. Nobody had claimed it yet. It was as good of a place as any to continue her work.
Several years passed. Megumi still had to scrounge for food on a regular basis. She barely scraped by with whatever she could scavenge. Still, opportunities to work on her masterpiece were far more plentiful. Eventually the android she had taken so long to construct took shape and was ready to activate. Finally, Megumi’s creation opened her eyes for the very first time.
The android had been named ‘Mint’. She had been built in the likeness of what Megumi guessed her deceased granddaughter would look like had she been given the time to grow up. Mint was an awfully curious young woman with a bubbly and somewhat naive personality. Megumi had decided to program her that way partially to break up how depressing day to day living had come to be, and partially to help Mint avoid fights if at all possible. Mint was very much like a child to Megumi. The old woman didn’t want her getting into situations that could cause her serious harm if she could avoid them. However, in this day and age, combat would surely be inescapable at times. Mint needed to be able to fight when the situation called for it. That’s why Megumi installed a personality override that could be triggered either manually by Megumi, or automatically when a significant threat was detected.
Mint always seems to be in a chipper mood despite the living conditions of the Ghettien Settlement. When she isn’t serving as a lab assistant or an errand girl for ‘Grandma’, she helps out at the Half Way House or even occasionally ventures a little ways outside of the settlement in search of anything useful or interesting to bring back. Grandma occasionally berates her for bringing home useless decorations or odd people, but it never seems to deter Mint from going out again in hopes of finding something useful. These little forays of hers into the outside world never cease to worry Megumi that something might happen with how innocent she programmed her creation to be. It’s even gotten to the point where she’s activated Mint’s remote override system to bring her straight home.
